January, 1st 2009

The year 2009 - the year of our great adventure - has started. Currently we are in the final planning stages or our trip. Just before Christmas we received our last bits & pieces of equipment, so we are fully equipped and ready to move now.

The last cold German winter days are beeing used for organising the last things such as booking the first accommodation or the ferry to Tasmania. In a few weeks, we will leave the cold European winter behind us and start in a hopefully warm and sunny Sydney.

The last weeks were flying by and today is the day of departure. In a few hours we will be leaving for the airport and things will get started.

By this means, we would like to thank for all the best wishes that reached us by phone, e-mail, guestbook, and certainly personally.

We will try to update our homepage regularly with reports and pictures, so you know how we are doing.

By now we are on our way since five days and have travelled extraordinary thirteen kilometres by bike but at least double of it by foot, not mentioned the ferry (one very important means of public transportation in Sydney) kilometres.

After a pleasant - but one hour late- flight, Sydney greeted us with 20 degrees and clouds. Having passed customs we heard an announcement that a Mr. Schmidt should get in touch with airport staff. After the announcement was repeated a couple of times I asked what first name the Mr. Schmidt had, who they were looking for, and it was me. They just wanted to let us know that our bikes were not on board the plane but it should be coming a day later. A couple of phone calls later and with the help of the campground staff we were able to get our bikes on Thursday. The packaging was really battered but fortunately our bikes were ok. We hope this will stay so during the train ride to Melbourne.

Awaking the first morning an peeking out of the tent we noticed that we were in the middle of lakes. It hat rained the whole night & day, nonetheless, it didn `t keep us from exploring Sydney. Around midday the sun came through and we got to see Sydney from its sunny side. Apart from waiting for the bikes we strolled through the city and visited its attractions as well as Manly Beach.
